Due to its location close to the equator, Kenya has a tropical climate with wet and dry seasons. The weather, however, differs from region to region. The coastal areas are hot and humid, while inland and higher up the temperatures tend to be more agreeable. Temperatures during the day vary between 22°C and 31°C, depending on the period and region. At night temperatures drop a little in coastal regions (to 18°C in cooler seasons) and a lot in some inland areas (up to 10°C in highlands).
Kenya has wet and dry seasons, with the dry seasons being much longer than the wet seasons. Kenya’s climate knows two wet seasons: the long and the short one. There are also two dry seasons; a cooler and warmer one.
Kenya’s short wet season is in November, with usually only occasional showers. The long wet season is in April and May. These months usually have shorter and longer showers, but not every day and only rarely does it rain a full day. Nights are usually wetter than days.
The cooler dry season starts in June, stays cool until September and then starts to heat up again until the end of October when the rainy season starts. The warmer one runs from December to March, with March heating up again for the rainy season.
Anytime!
One of the reasons Kenya is such a popular country for safari holidays is the fact that the climate allows for great travels all year round. Sure, we have two wet and dry seasons here as well as cooler and warmer periods. But in general, all seasons have their advantages.
Do you prefer to avoid busy days and keep your budget low? If so, the wet season is the best time to visit. You might encounter some showers, but also cooler weather, lots of green (everything bursts to life!) and definitely fewer travelers.
Do you want to maximize your chances of seeing big herds of wildlife? Then the dry season is ideal, with September and October as peak months. Animals gather around rivers and waterholes during dry seasons, which is why they are easier to spot. September and October are the months for the great migration in the Masai Mara National Reserve, which guarantees the sighting of thousands of animals.

The CDC uses Travel Health Notices (THNs) to inform travelers about global health risks during outbreaks, special events or gatherings, and natural disasters, and to provide advice about protective actions travelers can take to prevent infection or adverse health effects. As of February 2025, there were no Level 4 or Level 3 notices in Kenya. Please visit the CDC website for the latest information. The THNs are categorized by Level as indicated below:
Level 4 – Avoid All Travel

Level 2 – Practice Enhanced Precautions
Practice enhanced precautions for this destination. The Travel Health Notice describes additional precautions or defines a specific population at risk.
Level 1 – Practice Usual Precautions
Practice usual precautions for this destination, as described in the Travel Health Notice and/or on the destination page.
Traveler safety is our number one concern. Our guides are thoroughly trained with safety protocols that are designed to keep you safe! Like any Country, certain places are less safe than others. The same is true in Kenya. At Explore Kenya, we carefully examine and select the most safe locations and packages to make your trip worry-free.
That being said, most countries have government websites that give detailed, up to date travel advisory information which tells you whether it is safe or not to travel to a particular country. Please visit your country's official government website for the latest travel advisories for Kenya.

A good travel insurance plan provides peace of mind by covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events. It’s essential to have a reliable safety net, especially in remote areas where access to medical facilities and other services can be limited. Comprehensive travel insurance lets you focus on the thrill of your safari/trip, knowing that you’re protected against the unexpected.
In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, travel insurance may also help cover emergency medical expenses and emergency medical transportation, to the nearest adequate medical facility when ordered by a doctor. Reimbursement for additional accommodations, meals and local transportation expenses incurred due to travel delays. Reimbursement for the purchase of essential items if baggage is delayed; and coverage against lost, stolen or damaged baggage.
